Travel: West Village NYC
Amongst the hustle and bustle of New York City it can be incredibly difficult to find a moment of serenity, especially if you are visiting. With something new to do and see around every corner, the days can go for what seem like weeks and dont even get me started on the nightlife. It truly is the city that never sleeps! While this is just another day in the life of a New Yorkan if you are used to a more laidback, temperate kind of lifestyle you probably wouldnt last a single day in this city. As overwhelming as big cities can be there is always an oasis among the craziness, you just need to sniff it out, and no, central park is most definitely not it! My Oasis in NYC was the beautiful leafy neighbourhood of West Village. Located in a grid between the Hudson river to the West, Sixth Avenue to the East and runs all the way from West 14th street down to Houston. West Village is primarily residential but is home to some of the citys best restaurants, bars and scenery.
The West Village has everything, it truly is the best of both worlds. On one edge of the neighbourhood begins the meatpacking district, arguably one of the most glamorous parts of town and known for its never ending nightlife and exclusive door policies. On the waters edge of the neighbourhood runs the citys first aerial park aptly named ‘The Highline’ which spans a distance of 1.6 kilometres and is still yet to be completed. on the northern part of the neighbourhood is where the real oasis lies. Picture perfect cobble stone streets filled with billowing green trees and charming brownstones lined up next to eachother as far as the eye can see. Getting lost in amongst these streets was probably the most relaxed and composed I felt throughout the entire trip, more so than spending the day on the beach in Jersey.
If you are ever in New York a walk through the West Village is a must. Visit the highline, Chelsea markets and the meatpacking district or simply buy a kilo of blueberries from the local deli and sit on the stairs of your favourite brownstone and watch the world go by…Bliss!
And of Course this Utopia was the best backdrop for another spontaneous photoshoot.
